Presentació de l’assignatura Arts en Pantalla (Màster d’Humanitats)

En aquest curs del màster d’Humanitats, ens aproximem al fenomen cinematogràfic a través dels grans esdeveniments del segle XX. Aquesta mirada àmplia sobre les principals transformacions esdevingudes en l’àmbit del cinema, ens porta a considerar la producció cultural en la seva complexa relació amb processos històrics, moviments culturals i polític-socials (la postguerra de 1945, les revoltes de maig del 68, el feminisme dels 70).

Nuit et Brouillard, assaig documental de 1955 realitzat per Alain Resnais, sobre material confiscat als nazis i a partir d’un text de Jean Cayrol.

El recorregut que emprenem en aquesta assignatura, passa per alguns dels films i cineastes que emergeixen després de la Segona Guerra Mundial arribant fins a l’actualitat.

El marc cronològic obert a partir de 1945 es justifica per la necessitat de parlar de la crisi que va esdevenir en aquest marc cultural envaït pel trauma de postguerra. El cinema assumirà aquestes crisis de formes diverses. Amb l’emergència de la seva pròpia modernitat (que comença amb el neorealisme i culmina amb els nous cinemes), el autors i films partiran cap a noves poètiques, noves formes de narrar, altres formes de produir, consumir i entendre el cinema. Tant en la ficció, com en les apostes documentals, tindran lloc reflexions i diàlegs sobre la relació entre el cinema i les noves formes de la política, sobre la seva implicació amb la ideologia, o sobre el seu paper respecte a certs moviments socials.

Totes aquestes qüestions es visibilitzen en casos particulars. Al llarg del curs analitzem films i processos històrics, realitzem debats i lectures de textos rellevants. Per a comprendre aquesta metodologia docent i d’aprenentatge, per exemple, en el primer bloc de l’assignatura intentem comprendre què és i com afecta l’anomenada Modernitat als relats cinematogràfics. En la primera unitat, “Les noves vies del documental: cinema directe i cinéma vérité”, estudiem la mediació tecnològica de les noves càmeres lleugeres i com aquestes van propiciar noves formes d’apropar-se al món i registrar-ho. Això ens porta a reflexions sobre els propis mètodes de construcció del discurs. Veiem com en el camp documental juguen un rol important les diferents maneres d’implicar-se amb la realitat a filmar. Així, analitzem algunes propostes fílmiques de finals dels cinquanta, veiem com es transforma la intervenció dels cineastes amb la realitat: a través d’elements com la “entrevista”; o de la interacció entre actors i directors en el procés constitutiu del film, o bé, de forma radicalment diferent, a través de la mínima intervenció del realitzador sobre allò a enregistrar…

L’articulació entre fonts audiovisuals i referents teòrics ens dóna eines per pensar de forma conjunta a través de debats a l’aula. Algunes de les preguntes plantejades han estat: quines implicacions morals i ètiques té la presència d’una càmera? Quines implicacions tenen aquestes dues postures a l’hora de codificar la realitat a través del cinema? Els debats condueixen a reflexions prolífiques, per exemple, entorn de què significa la ficció, què significa representar? què va voler dir Eric Barnow amb que “el cinéma vérité responia a una paradoxa: la paradoxa que circumstàncies artificials poden fer sortir a la superfície veritats ocultes”?

Per a això, ens recolzem en bibliografia especialitzada (Bill Nichols, Maria Luisa Ortega, Edgar Morin, Richard Leacock,); en fonts autoreferencials i divulgatives com el documental de Peter Wintonick Cinéma Vérité: Defining the Moment (1999); en casos històrics paradigmàtics com Chronique d’un été (Jean Rouch i Edgar Morin, 1961) i High School (Frederick Wiseman, 1968).

Així arribem a adquirir competències per establir i comprendre quines han estat les formes de transgressió de la modernitat respecte al classicisme (la consciència lingüística i la ruptura de la transparència de la representació, per exemple). Analitzant com aquestes noves formes de realisme es transfereixen al cinema de ficció, sorgeixen comentaris i assajos sobre films com  Shadows (John Cassavetes, 1959) o 2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle (Jean Luc Godard, 1967), entre molts altres, suggerits per estudiants o  professores, històrics o contemporanis…

Al llarg del curs i gràcies a la participació de totes, establim riques connexions amb problemàtiques similars, donades en l’àmbit cultural del segle XIX i XX (la novel·la naturalista, les avantguardes històriques, Bertol Brecht, la militància del 68, el situacionisme, el feminisme) i amb la pròpia tradició cinematogràfica (la càmera stylo d’Astruc, la política dels autors, l’experimentació nord-americana, Laura Mulvey, el Tercer Cinema). De forma participativa intentem respondre a preguntes com què va significar, en els anys seixanta i setanta, parlar d’ideologia i cinema? Quins efectes va tenir en les propostes estètiques de cineastes com Pasolini, Alexander Kluge o Straub i Huillet? O com ha contribuït el cinema a les desigualtats de gènere? com exercir la crítica des de la teoria i la praxi?

La metodologia docent d’Arts en pantalla, per tant, intenta articular les innovacions teòriques de la segona meitat del segle XX, tant des de la teoria crítica com des dels estudis fílmics, amb la pràctica cinematogràfica immersa en aquesta història. Tot, articulat amb el bagatge cultural adquirit pel estudiant en el seu itinerari pel Màster d’Humanitats.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
