Mite – Només utilitzem el deu per cent del nostre cervell. Som les nostres connexions (4)

Reflexió inicial 

Sovint s’adverteix a mestres i professors que si algú els vol vendre un programa informàtic amb el qual, basat en el cervell, puguin ensenyar millor als seus alumnes, el primer que han de fer és posar-se la mà a la butxaca, ja que aquest venedor només voldrà guanyar diners [1]. Una gran part dels programes que es venen, contenen falses concepcions de l’ensenyament, a causa d’un desconeixement real de les dades de com funciona el cervell. El problema bàsic és que molts mestres, desitjosos d’implementar el seu ensenyament amb mètodes i pràctiques noves que millorin les seves eines docents, no posseeixen preparació amb la qual poder avaluar i criticar aquests programes i els accepten com ben fonamentats en neurociència.

El problema no són els mestres i els professors, sinó l’alfabetització en neurociència que encara no està present en l’ensenyament (excepte els estudis que s’hi relacionen) ni en els màsters de formació del professorat.  Agreujat per les notícies que difon la premsa, per la dificultat d’interpretar els fets científics i per la difusió dels sistemes «alternatius».

El 2005, amb motiu d’una conferència on s’anunciava l’obertura del Centre per a l’Educació basada en la Neurociència de la Universitat de Cambridge, els mestres que hi van assistir van manifestar rebre més de 70 correus electrònics a l’any animant-los a matricular-se en cursos sobre «com ensenyar millor a les escoles», basats en coneixements del cervell; alguns d’aquests cursos promouen la interpretació errònia de les dades científiques i, en conseqüència, una aplicació falsificada dels possibles beneficis d’aquests coneixements.

Tot un cúmul de neuromites han donat lloc a crear expectatives poc realistes en els mestres i professors. Un exemple és la lectura incorrecta d’un fet neurobiològic, com la proliferació de les connexions neuronals en els primers anys de vida. Avui sabem que en el cervell dels nens té lloc una enorme i profusa proliferació sinàptica (milions de sinapsis tots els dies). Doncs bé, basant-se en aquest fet, s’ha especulat sobre la possibilitat d’aprofitar aquests temps de canvis profusos i profunds per «inundar» el seu cervell, de manera paral·lela a aquest creixement sinàptic, amb conceptes, vocabularis, memorització d’esdeveniments històrics, fets aïllats i percepcions complexes a través de mitjans audiovisuals perquè siguin millor absorbits i incorporats al cervell durant aquesta proliferació sinàptica, pensant que, d’aquesta manera, quan aquests nens arribin a la joventut o l’edat adulta, tindrien capacitats cognitives superiors a les dels seus companys que no haguessin utilitzat aquests mètodes. Malauradament els que van promoure aquestes idees no van tenir en compte la manca d’evidència científica sobre la relació entre aquest fenomen neurobiològic de proliferació sinàptica i el procés d’aprenentatge. És més, els mateixos pares, davant ofertes d’aquest tipus sempre reaccionen amb un component fortament emocional. «Però, no és veritat que els nens aprenen coses fonamentals i de manera fàcil en els primers anys? Com no aprofitaré aquest possible avantatge per al meu fill encara que no sigui del tot cert?».

És similar a l’«efecte Mozart». Durant algun temps es va pensar que escoltar una sonata de piano o una simfonia de Mozart, tenia l’efecte d’augmentar la capacitat d’aprenentatge en els nens i també facilitar el raonament abstracte d’estudiants universitaris. Altres estudis posteriors també van suggerir que no només la música de Mozart, sinó altres músiques o fins i tot la lectura d’algun passatge atractiu d’un llibre, eren capaços d’influir en les tasques que realitzaven els nens, fossin aquestes retallar dibuixos d’un paper o fer figures de cartrons amb les vores fistonades. I això es va extrapolar: si els nens en els seus primers anys escolten la música de Mozart en l’ambient relaxat de casa seva, això podria tenir efectes beneficiosos per al seu desenvolupament mental i donar com a resultat nens més capaços i intel·ligents. En estudis rigorosos posteriors es va mostrar clarament que aquest no és el cas. L’efecte Mozart, doncs, va ser rebutjat.

El que sí que s’ha pogut comprovar són els beneficis cognitius de tocar un instrument. Només escoltar no produeix cap benefici clarament evident. Escoltar i tocar al mateix temps, per contra, sí. La percepció, execució i manipulació d’un instrument, activant àrees sensorials i motores simultàniament, sí que repercuteix en una major habilitat general en els nens. Estudis recents han mostrat que tocar un instrument resulta en una millor comprensió del llenguatge i promou, a més, la millora d’habilitats generals, com l’atenció, la percepció i discriminació d’estímuls (tons musicals), la memòria de treball i el control motor de la pròpia conducta. Avui coneixem bé en neurociència l’efecte de l’activitat motora sobre la mateixa percepció sensorial.

Hi ha molts neuromites que, tot i que se n’ha demostrat la seva falsedat per la neurociència, segueixen estant vius en el patrimoni popular a causa fonamentalment de la constant repetició en els mitjans de comunicació. Alguns mites perden ímpetu, passen de moda o es queden només en la perifèria de la creença popular. Però altres manifesten una resistència notable, pròpia de zombis, i aconsegueixen seguir avançant tot i acumular moltes proves en contra. Són aquestes creences tenaces i populars les que sovint fan servir com a base els autoproclamats gurus o predicadors per donar versemblança a la seva xerrameca o a les seves maldestres campanyes. La resistència d’alguns d’aquests mites també es veu afavorida pel seu caràcter seductor: enalteixen fets que serien una gran notícia si fossin certs. Comencem parlant d’un dels mites relatius al cervell més resistents: que només fem servir el deu per cent del nostre cervell.

Aquesta és la immortal idea segons la qual la majoria de nosaltres ens les vam arreglar amb tan sols una petita fracció del nostre cervell, deixant el gruix del nostre potencial cerebral massivament sense explotar. La quantitat de matèria grisa que suposadament vam dilapidar ha crescut o ha disminuït al llarg del temps, però un 90 per cent és la xifra més popular. 

Exemple 1.

És fàcil veure on és l’atractiu d’aquest mite. A qui no li agradaria creure que disposa d’unes reserves enormes de potència cerebral latent esperant a ser alliberades? «Ja sabeu el que diuen que només podem accedir al 20 per cent dels nostres cervells», diu un personatge de la pel·lícula Limitless [Sense límits, 2011]. «Però amb aquesta píndola tenim accés al cent per cent». Amb l’ajuda de la màgica droga, el protagonista de la pel·lícula, un escriptor interpretat per Bradley Cooper, aconsegueix escriure en pocs dies una novel·la que té pendent, aprendre un nou idioma en una sola nit, i guanyar milions a la Borsa.

De manera semblant, l’any 2014 es va estrenar Lucy, en què Scarlett Johansson interpreta una dona a la qual li injecten una poderosa droga. «Una persona normal utilitza només un 10 per cent de la seva capacitat cerebral», afirma el cartell de la pel·lícula, «imagini el que podria fer amb el cent per cent». Es podria arribar a dominar un cabal enorme de coneixements i conduir un cotxe amb la ment. «No estic molt segur que la humanitat estigui preparada per a això», diu el neurocientífic fictici que apareix en la pel·lícula, un Morgan Freeman amb una impressionant cara de pòquer.

Exemple 3.

Els anunciants també han contribuït a difondre el mite. A la seva web “Neurociència per a nens”, [2] Eric Chudler recull diversos exemples de com aquest mite ha estat invocat per afalagar i atraure potencials clients, inclòs el d’una línia aèria que fanfarronejava d’aquesta manera: «Diuen que només utilitzem un 10 per cent de la nostra capacitat cerebral, però si vostè vola amb les aerolínies ****, està utilitzant un percentatge molt més elevat ».

Exemple 4.

Segons Christopher Wanjek, autor d’un llibre sobre idees falses en medicina [3], l’ús del mite en el camp de la publicitat es remunta a 1944 amb l’anunci de l’Institut Pelman, una empresa londinenca proveïdora de cursos d’auto ajuda per correspondència, que en un anunci als diaris deia: «¿Què el reté? Només una cosa, un fet científic. Perquè, com diu la Ciència, vostè només està utilitzant un 10 per cent de la seva potència cerebral! »

Experiment 1.

Les enquestes més recents demostren la persistència de la creença de la gent en el mite del 10 per cent, inclosos aquells que en teoria estan impartint els seus coneixements a la següent generació. En una enquesta publicada el 2012, Sanne Dekker i els seus col·legues van sotmetre a prova a 137 mestres de primària i secundària d’Anglaterra i a 105 d’Holanda [4]. Un 48 per cent dels mestres anglesos creien erròniament que només fem servir un 10 per cent del nostre cervell (un 26 per cent deia desconèixer-ho); un 46 per cent dels mestres holandesos creia també en el mite, i un 12 per cent deia desconèixer-lo.

Experiment 2. 

La creença en el mite pot trobar-se arreu del món. L’any 2002, Suzana Herculano-Houzel, del Museu de la Vida a Rio de Janeiro va realitzar una enquesta entre dues mil persones i, centrant-se només en les que tenien estudis universitaris, va trobar que el 59 per cent creia que fem servir només un 10 per cent dels nostres cervells [5]. De manera més preocupant, una mostra comparativa de 35 neurocientífics de tot el món va mostrar que el 6 per cent d’ells també creia que el mite del 10 per cent era veritat.

Origen del mite

D’on ve, doncs, aquesta idea que grans porcions de la nostra matèria grisa romanen inactives? Quan el difunt psicòleg i caçador de mites Barry Beyerstein va intentar identificar la font del mite va trobar múltiples candidats culpables més que un sol sospitós. També va descobrir que moltes d’aquestes pistes es basaven en informacions falses i en cites incorrectes. [6]

Versió 1.

Al començament del segle XX, el psicòleg pioner William James va escriure i parlar de la idea segons la qual la gent té una «energia mental latent», encara que no la va quantificar citant una xifra precisa [7]. Cal notar que l’argument de James era sobre energia i potencial, no sobre quin percentatge del nostre cervell utilitzem. Aquesta confusió contribueix probablement a explicar la longevitat del mite del 10 per cent; pot significar diferents coses per a diferents persones, i l’afirmació que tenim un potencial sense explotar és menys polèmica que la idea concreta que només utilitzem una petita fracció del nostre cervell.

Versió 2.

Malauradament, la primera afirmació es metamorfosa fàcilment en la segona. El periodista Lowell Thomas va contribuir a aquest procés en el seu prefaci al mega best seller de Dale Carnegie publicat el 1936, Com guanyar amics i influir sobre les persones, un dels clàssics de l’autoajuda, on va adjuntar la xifra precisa del 10 per cent a l’argument de James sobre el nostre potencial no explotat, escrivint: «El professor William James, de Harvard, solia dir que de mitjana la gent només desenvolupa un 10 per cent de la seva capacitat mental latent». D’aquesta manera Thomas exposava a milions de lectors a una de les primeres versions d’aquest mite del cervell.

Versió 3. 

Una altra possible font és una cita atribuïda a Albert Einstein. Pel que sembla Einstein li va dir a un periodista que el secret del seu geni era que utilitzava tota la capacitat del seu cervell i no només el 10 per cent que utilitzem la resta. No obstant això, quan Beyerstein va sol·licitar als experts dels Arxius d’Albert Einstein que li localitzessin aquesta cita, van ser incapaços de fer-ho, o sigui que probablement es tracta d’una altra història apòcrifa.

Versió 4. 

També alimenten el mite del 10 per cent algunes interpretacions errònies de la investigació neurocientífica. Per exemple, en la dècada de 1930 el neurocirurgià canadenc Wilder Penfield va descobrir que podia provocar diverses sensacions als seus pacients epilèptics estimulant directament la superfície dels seus cervells (l’oportunitat de fer-ho va sorgir durant unes intervencions realitzades per alleujar els seus atacs). Penfield també va trobar que estimulant determinades zones no produïa cap efecte, el que va portar a la noció que hi ha grans àrees de «còrtex silenciós». Avui, aquestes regions del còrtex es coneixen com «còrtex d’associació» i se sap que estan implicades en algunes de les nostres funcions mentals més sofisticades. Les afirmacions mèdiques infundades fetes durant el passat segle segons les quals els pacients de lobotomia es curaven sense prendre mal van donar pàbul a la idea que grans trossos del cervell eren funcionalment inútils. També cal citar el càlcul, erroni però molt comú, que el nombre de neurones és deu vegades menor que el de les cèl·lules glials, el que es pot mal interpretar com significant que només el 10 per cent de les cèl·lules del nostre cervell estan implicades en algun tipus de funció mental (les cèl·lules glials són un tipus de cèl·lules cerebrals implicades en diverses funcions, incloses l’eliminació de residus i el control del flux sanguini). 

Versió 5.

Finalment, existeixen informes, com els relatius als pacients afligits d’hidrocefàlia (excés de fluid en el cervell), que tenen cervells més petits del normal, però que semblen funcionar sense la menor dificultat. I els nombrosos informes de persones que han sobreviscut a ferides de bala al cap i a altres lesions cerebrals, de vegades amb poques incapacitacions òbvies (de fet, les lesions cerebrals greus sempre tenen conseqüències duradores). L’aparent implicació d’aquests casos va ser exposada de manera provocadora en un article publicat a la revista Science el 1980 i titulat “És realment necessari el seu cervell?” [8] en el qual se cita al difunt neuròleg britànic John Lorber descrivint a un jove estudiant amb hidrocefàlia de la seva universitat que «té un coeficient intel·lectual de 126, ha obtingut les notes més altes de la seva promoció en matemàtiques i que, socialment, és completament normal. I no obstant això, el noi no té pràcticament cervell». En un documental de la televisió britànica amb el mateix títol emès el 1991 apareixia Lorber fent les mateixes afirmacions basant-se aquesta vegada en diversos dels seus pacients. Segons Beyerstein, Lorber era famós llavors per les seves polèmiques declaracions, i és molt probable que exagerés una mica les coses per aconseguir un efecte més dramàtic. Els escàners utilitzats en el documental no permetien distingir entre compressió del còrtex i pèrdua real de cèl·lules cerebrals. El punt de vista de Beyerstein era que no era cert que els casos documentats «no tinguessin pràcticament de cervell» per sobre del tronc cerebral, encara que el seu còrtex estava clarament deformat.

La realitat

Argument 1. 

Quin percentatge del nostre cervell utilitzem realment? La veritat és que el fem servir tot: no hi ha una quantitat de matèria neural de reserva esperant que li assignem algun treball. Això ha estat confirmat per milers d’escàners cerebrals en els quals es poden veure ones d’activitat creuant tot el cervell, fins i tot quan es demana als subjectes que no pensin en res. De fet, hi ha tota una xarxa d’àrees –l’anomenada «xarxa neural per defecte»– que es torna més activa quan la persona s’esforça al màxim per desconnectar del món exterior.

Argument 2.

Una altra prova que refuta el mite del 10 per cent és la procedent dels estudis de pacients amb lesions cerebrals per als quals el dany més petit pot tenir conseqüències devastadores. És veritat que, amb el temps, el cervell té una notable capacitat per adaptar-se al mal. De fet, és aquesta plasticitat el que explica els casos d’hidrocefàlia citats per Lorber en el seu documental i en el seu article de la revista Science. Els trastorns de desenvolupament lent com la hidrocefàlia permeten que el cervell trobi noves maneres de funcionar. Encara que el fet que el cervell sigui capaç de trobar la forma de reorganitzar-se després de perdre unes quantes neurones no vol dir necessàriament que aquestes neurones no estiguessin exercint alguna funció. De fet, si unes neurones acaben quedant-se realment sense feina –per exemple, quan un membre del que rebien senyals sensorials és amputat– el que passa és que els sistemes cerebrals veïns envaeixen i s’apropien d’aquesta matèria cerebral redundant. Això pot donar lloc a l’estranya situació que tocant la cara d’una persona a la qual li han amputat una cama es provoquin sensacions en el seu membre «fantasma», degut precisament a que les neurones de la cara s’han apropiat de la matèria grisa que representava abans la cama.

Argument 3.

La idea que utilitzem només una petita fracció del nostre cervell tampoc té sentit des d’un punt de vista evolutiu. El cervell és una autèntica esponja absorbint energia: consumeix el 20 per cent de l’energia que necessita el cos encara que només representa el 2 per cent de la nostra massa corporal. L’evolució per selecció natural tendeix a eliminar tot el que és ineficient, així que seria molt poc versemblant que hagués conservat un òrgan tan costós si realment fos tan redundant com diu el mite. Imagineu una empresa en la qual la major part del personal estigués tot el dia assegut sense fer res. Serien immediatament acomiadats. El mateix pot dir-se de les nostres cèl·lules cerebrals. Tenim un potencial enorme per aprendre coses noves i recuperar-nos d’una lesió? Per descomptat. Utilitzem només el deu per cent del nostre cervell? Rotundament, no.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  6. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  8. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  10. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
