“Transnational Literature, the Triumph of the National Novel”, per Jernej Habjan

En el marc del Seminari internacional Perspectives globals en les Humanitats i les Ciències Socials, us convidem a la conferència Transnational Literature, the Triumph of the National Novel, a càrrec de Jernej Habjan, investigador al Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Resum de la conferència

The expansion of modernity has led to what we today call globalization; and the expansion of generic differentiation in literature has led to what we might call literary globalization. And just as with globalization in general, in literary globalization too differentiation comes with its opposite, unification. Just as the globalization of modernity brings about not only ideological differentiation but also capitalist standardization, so too literary genres not only lose first Horatian and then classicist unity, but also gain a certain unity. With Mikhail Bakhtin, this new unity can simply be called the novel. Literary globalization, if we may indeed call it that, certainly has to do with the Bakhtinian process of the novelization of all genres since the Renaissance. Indeed, this may be the key to the strange fact that not only histories of national literatures but even studies of postcolonial, transnational, and world literature tend to revolve around novels.

Nota biogràfica

Jernej Habjan is Research Fellow at the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies, Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Munich and the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna. Besides authoring two Slovenian-language books of literary theory, he has guest-edited a 2015 special issue of the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature titled Novel beyond Nation as well as co-edited Globalizing Literary Genres (Routledge, 2016), Academic Labour, Unemployment and Global Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016), (Mis)readings of Marx in Continental Philosophy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and a 2016 special issue of Slavica Tergestina titled “The Yugoslav Partisan Art.” His articles have appeared in (a): The Journal of Culture and the Unconscious, CLCWeb, Neohelicon, and South Atlantic Quarterly.
